A year-long legal conflict has concluded with Krafton’s agreement to disburse bonuses to the development team of Subnautica 2, Unknown Worlds Entertainment. This resolution follows a settlement reached with the studio’s leadership, including Ted Gill, who was previously removed and later reinstated as CEO by court order. The dispute centered on bonus payments tied to the commercial success of Subnautica 2, a game whose development and release timeline were central to the legal arguments.
In an interview, Ted Gill confirmed his voluntary resignation as the studio executive, citing a “mutually agreed to part ways” arrangement subsequent to the settlement. He further clarified that all Unknown Worlds employees, not merely those present at the time of Krafton's acquisition of the studio, will benefit from the bonus payouts, which are slated to be distributed in three annual installments. This ensures a broader distribution of the financial incentives, reflecting a more inclusive approach to rewarding the team’s efforts.
The genesis of this disagreement traces back to 2021 when Krafton acquired Unknown Worlds for a substantial sum of $500 million, with an additional $250 million contingent upon the achievement of specific financial benchmarks, particularly strong sales performance for Subnautica 2. As the initial launch window for Subnautica 2 approached in 2025, Krafton dismissed Gill and co-founder Charlie Cleveland, subsequently delaying the game’s early access release to 2026. The ousted executives initiated legal proceedings, contending that their termination and the game’s delay were calculated moves by Krafton to circumvent its bonus payment obligations. A Delaware judge intervened, mandating Gill’s reinstatement and an extension of the bonus earn-out period to align with the revised launch schedule. This legal battle also brought to light Krafton CEO Changhan Kim's controversial consultation of ChatGPT for strategic advice on managing the Subnautica 2 situation, a revelation that added a unique dimension to the high-stakes corporate drama.
The settlement not only resolves a complex legal entanglement but also ensures that the dedicated team behind Subnautica 2 receives the recognition and financial rewards for their contributions. This outcome underscores the importance of contractual agreements and fair compensation in the dynamic gaming industry, particularly in the context of acquisitions and performance-based incentives. Gill’s departure, while voluntary, marks the end of an era for Unknown Worlds under his leadership, paving the way for a new chapter following this significant legal resolution.
