It all started on Monday when volunteers went to a Hurricane Beryl damaged city building to gather donated items for the Blue Santa Toy Store. Families in need could purchase toys and other gifts at an 80% discount. But what they discovered was a shocking sight. There had been a severe rat infestation, and everything in that area was covered in rat feces and urine. Chief Jennifer Howell knew that they couldn't give such contaminated toys to children and risk their health. Christmas is a time of magic, and she wanted every child to experience it.

The previous checks of the storm-damaged building had only revealed a little water damage. But this rat infestation had damaged all the donated items, including toys, backpacks, and books. Basketball goals were chewed on, footballs, basketballs, and soccer balls were all affected. There was a wide variety of items, from those for infants to those for 18-year-olds.
