The previous checks of the storm-damaged building had only revealed a little water damage. But this rat infestation had damaged all the donated items, including toys, backpacks, and books. Basketball goals were chewed on, footballs, basketballs, and soccer balls were all affected. There was a wide variety of items, from those for infants to those for 18-year-olds.
Freeport Police already had about 300 kids on their list, and more were coming. Despite the time constraints, the Blue Santa volunteers are reaching out for help from businesses and the community.
