Staudinger, a native Angeleno, sees a significant opportunity for fashion to claim its space within Los Angeles's burgeoning cultural landscape. She argues that despite the city's growing global recognition in art, the fashion element has often been overlooked. With this vision in mind, she curated an exclusive cocktail gathering in the penthouse of Chateau Marmont, aiming to establish fashion's prominent role during Frieze Los Angeles. The evening served as a convergence point for a diverse array of guests, from prominent figures in art and design to Hollywood's elite, fostering a dynamic atmosphere of interdisciplinary exchange.
The event also served as a platform for an exciting new collaboration: a unique rendition of Staud's popular Tommy Bag, designed in partnership with Merikokeb Berhanu, an acclaimed Ethiopian painter. Berhanu's distinctive work, currently showcased at the James Cohan gallery's Frieze presentation, provided the inspiration for these four ultra-limited edition handbags. These artistic accessories, each priced at $1,300 and limited to just ten pieces per design, are exclusively available at Staud's Melrose Avenue flagship. This marks Staud's inaugural venture into artist collaborations for her signature bag, underscoring her commitment to blending fashion with fine art and offering accessible, wearable art pieces to a broader audience.
Throughout the penthouse, Staudinger's personal artistic touch was evident, particularly through her cheerful 'Henry' ceramic sculptures. These delightful, smiley-faced characters, conceived in her home studio and now integral to the Staud brand identity, were strategically placed as decorative elements and even functioned as a playful cigarette holder. Guests departing the festivities were treated to a thoughtful gift bag, which included their own ceramic Henry figurine and a Staud x Frieze cashmere sweater, ensuring that the spirit of art and fashion extended beyond the evening's celebrations. Staudinger's endeavor to integrate fashion seamlessly into the art world, as exemplified by this vibrant collaboration and event, not only elevates her brand but also enriches Los Angeles's cultural tapestry, making high art more relatable and enjoyable for all.
