A heartwarming initiative has begun in Port St. Lucie, where the Humane Society of St. Lucie County is introducing a unique reading program for children and shelter cats. Starting from February 15th, this weekly event invites young readers aged 6-15 to spend an hour with the feline residents of the shelter. In a serene and secure setting, kids can read aloud either from their personal collections or choose books from the shelter's modest library. This program aims to create a win-win situation by enhancing children's literacy skills while providing shy and anxious cats with comforting human interaction.

The driving force behind this program is author Sherry Dunn, whose book Maddie & Jasmine will be one of the reading materials available. Through her work, Dunn promotes a deep-seated love for animal welfare. The presence of shelter animals offers emotional support to the young readers, fostering a sense of compassion and empathy towards creatures in need. Studies have shown that such activities not only soothe the animals but also improve their chances of finding loving homes, as they become more relaxed and sociable.
