In a thrilling display of resilience and skill, St. Jude emerged victorious in the featured eighth race at Laurel Park on Saturday, February 8, 2025. Despite challenging weather conditions, this 6-year-old horse demonstrated remarkable endurance to claim the top spot in a $49,000 first-level allowance contest for horses aged four and above, covering seven furlongs. Under jockey Jaime Rodriguez, St. Jude showcased impressive form, overcoming initial challenges to finish three lengths ahead of Beaver State. The victory marked only his fourth career start, highlighting the patience and dedication of owner-breeder Jeremiah Kane and trainer Ben Perkins Jr., who have nurtured St. Jude through several setbacks. This win underscores St. Jude's potential and sets the stage for future long-distance races.

The race began with Swifty Devil and Beaver State leading the pack through early fractions of 23.32 and 46.73 seconds over the good main track. St. Jude, positioned third on the outside, maintained a steady pace as the leaders battled it out. As they approached the quarter pole, St. Jude made his move, cruising up to challenge the frontrunners. Although he faced some resistance, St. Jude managed to pull ahead decisively, crossing the finish line in 1:25.66. Swifty Devil secured third place, two lengths behind Beaver State. Cathedral Beach and Boys of Summer followed, rounding out the field. Uniwinner was scratched from the race.

St. Jude's journey to this victory has been marked by perseverance. Owner-breeder Jeremiah Kane recounted the numerous hurdles the horse faced, including a shin injury as a 2-year-old and a fetlock injury as a 3-year-old. These setbacks delayed St. Jude's racing debut until he was four years old. However, once he took to the track, St. Jude proved his mettle, winning his debut by 2½ lengths with an impressive 89 Beyer speed figure in a six-furlong maiden special weight race at Laurel on March 20, 2023. After missing most of the following season due to recovery, St. Jude raced twice last year, finishing fifth in a first-level allowance and running a strong second behind stakes-bound Worcester on December 27.

Kane expressed concerns about the wet track conditions on race day but noted that St. Jude's heart and stride make him a formidable competitor. "He’s a heck of a horse," Kane said. "His best performances come from the eighth pole home. We believe he can handle even longer distances, perhaps up to a mile or more. His stride is huge, and he can run forever." St. Jude's latest triumph confirms Kane's belief in the horse's potential and paves the way for exciting prospects in future races.

Earlier in the day, another notable performance came from All the Hardways, a three-year-old owned by Hard Ten Stables. Under jockey Xavier Perez, All the Hardways won a 1 1/16-mile allowance test by 3½ lengths, clocking in at 1:50.24. Trainer John Robb praised the horse's relaxed demeanor during the race, noting that All the Hardways showed promise even when not fully engaged. This win marks All the Hardways' third victory in ten starts, adding to the day's excitement at Laurel Park.
