South Lake Tahoe: Hungry Black Bears and Their Food Delivery Feast

Nov 18, 2024 at 8:27 PM
In South Lake Tahoe, a rather unusual sight has been captured on camera. Two hungry black bears were seen making a meal out of someone else's food delivery. Viewer Kristin Thomas shared this video with KCRA 3, and it shows the two bears quickly finding and devouring a box of food left outside the door. This bear sighting occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. Additionally, a larger third bear joined the two cubs.

Importance of Bear Safety

Although November is typically the time when black bears in California start to hibernate, as the U.S. Forest Service notes, they can be easily awakened. Bear encounters are on the rise, especially in the Tahoe Basin, which has become a "hot spot" for such incidents. While bear videos may be entertaining to watch, it is crucial to maintain a safe distance from bears. Increased human interaction can cause bears to become more comfortable around people, even in crowded areas. In November 2023, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife reported the first documented case of a deadly black bear attack on a human in the state's history. A 71-year-old woman in the Downieville area of Sierra County was attacked and killed by a bear.

Black Bear Behavior in November

During November, black bears in California are in a state of transition. They are usually preparing to enter hibernation, but they can still be active and on the lookout for food. The presence of food deliveries outside doors provides an easy target for these bears. As seen in the video, they are quick to find and consume the available food. This behavior highlights the need for caution and proper food storage to avoid attracting bears.

Impact of Bear Encounters

The increasing number of bear encounters has significant implications for both humans and bears. In crowded areas, the likelihood of a bear becoming accustomed to human presence increases, which can lead to dangerous situations. It is essential for residents and visitors to be aware of their surroundings and take necessary precautions. By keeping a safe distance and not providing easy access to food, we can help reduce the risk of bear-human conflicts.

Preventing Bear Attacks

To prevent bear attacks, it is important to follow certain guidelines. This includes properly storing food, garbage, and other attractants. Using bear-resistant containers and securing trash cans can help deter bears from approaching. Additionally, making noise when in bear country can alert the bears to your presence and prevent them from being surprised. By taking these simple steps, we can coexist with bears in a safe and harmonious manner.
