This month has been fruitful for South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley, as she welcomed two significant additions to her team through the transfer portal. Following Ta’Niya Latson’s commitment earlier in the month, the Gamecocks secured another key player on Monday when Madina Okot joined the program. Reported by Talia Goodman of On3, this addition addresses a glaring need for interior dominance that Coach Staley identified throughout the season.
Standing at 6-6, Madina Okot is a senior transfer from Mississippi State and one of the most sought-after post players available. This past season, Okot demonstrated impressive versatility, averaging 11.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.1 blocks, and 1.4 steals per game while shooting an efficient 64.9% from the field. Her presence will provide much-needed depth and strength inside for the Gamecocks, who previously relied on just freshman Adhel Tac and senior Sakima Walker as their primary options taller than 6-3.
Okot’s journey to collegiate basketball is unconventional compared to her peers. Despite excelling at Mississippi State, she only began playing organized basketball in 2020. Before joining the Bulldogs ahead of the 2024-2025 season, she spent two years at Zetech University in Kenya. As she enters her fourth year of college basketball next season, her eligibility status remains uncertain due to NCAA rules regarding players with experience at levels below Division I. Nonetheless, her impact on the court is undeniable.
For the upcoming 2025-2026 season, Okot aims to emulate the legacy of dominant post players like A’ja Wilson, Aliyah Boston, and Kamilla Cardoso, who were instrumental in South Carolina’s championship runs. With teammates such as Chloe Kitts, Ashlyn Watkins, Joyce Edwards, and Maryam Dauda providing versatile support, Okot is poised to seamlessly integrate into the Gamecocks' dynamic lineup.
The arrival of Madina Okot signals a strategic move by Coach Staley to strengthen South Carolina’s roster. By addressing their lack of an imposing interior presence, the Gamecocks position themselves as serious contenders in the competitive world of women’s college basketball. Okot’s unique background and proven skills make her a valuable asset, ensuring the team remains formidable both now and in the future.
