Navigating the Next Generation: "Sonic Frontiers" on Switch 2
No Direct Upgrade Path from Original Switch Version
Upon the launch of "Sonic Frontiers - Definitive Edition" on the Nintendo Switch 2, SEGA has explicitly stated that owners of the original Switch version will not be eligible for a free upgrade or a discounted price for the new console's iteration. This means that players who wish to experience the Definitive Edition on Switch 2 must purchase it at its full retail price, a policy that diverges from some other cross-generational releases like "Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds."
Save Data Transferability and DLC Exclusions
Despite the absence of an upgrade path, SEGA has confirmed that save data from the original Switch version of "Sonic Frontiers" can be transferred to the Switch 2 Definitive Edition. This offers a degree of continuity for players; however, it's important to note that this transfer is one-way, meaning data cannot be moved back to the original Switch. Furthermore, several specific DLC items, including the Inugami Korone Collaboration DLC elements (sound effects, Koronesky, gloves & shoes) and the Sonic Emote (Koco) DLC, will not be retained during the save data transfer. Players are also advised to install the "Explorer's Treasure Box" DLC prior to commencing a new game to ensure all items are accessible.
The "Physical" Release: A Digital Download Experience
For those considering a physical purchase of "Sonic Frontiers" for the Switch 2, SEGA has clarified that this version is presented as a Game-Key Card. This implies that even with a physical purchase, players will still be required to download the game, making the experience more akin to a digital acquisition rather than a traditional physical cartridge release. This approach might surprise some consumers expecting a fully self-contained physical product.
