"Planning is a crucial component of achieving success," emphasized Melinda Stockwell, the Career Development Manager at SMC. "If you fail to plan, you're planning to fail. Careful preparation and support from others set the stage for students to thrive."The Futures Fair featured six stations, each dedicated to a specific industry: business, social sciences, creative fields, math/science, health services, and advanced technology. These stations were staffed by representatives from a diverse array of organizations, including American Electric Power, Big C Lumber, C Wimberley Automotive Group, Corewell Health, Flowers Early Learning, Lyons Industries, Michigan Works, Midwest Energy and Communications (MEC), Mid-West Family radio stations, and Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service (SMCAS).Exploring Diverse Career Pathways
At the health services station, nursing faculty, including Dean Dr. Melissa Kennedy, Athletic Trainer Elise Bancroft, Stryker, and SMCAS, shared their expertise and showcased innovative technologies, such as Stryker's device that automates cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).Nick Bogen, a meteorology graduate from Central Michigan University, found his niche in geographic information systems development at MEC in Cassopolis, where he works with drones. The Futures Fair also highlighted the changing landscape of the automotive industry. Kenny Hintz, the Service Manager at C Wimberley Automotive Group, emphasized the growing need for IT professionals in the field, as the industry moves towards more technology-driven solutions."In the next 10-15 years, I'll need more IT guys than hard-nosed mechanics," Hintz said. "A check-engine light can be one of 500 things." The Futures Fair also showcased the innovative technologies that are transforming various industries. Lyons Industries, co-founded in 1968 by longtime SMC Board of Trustees Vice Chairman Dale A. Lyons, has embraced automation, using robots to spray fiberglass and strengthen their products.At the American Electric Power (AEP) station, the representative highlighted how the company utilizes drones to configure power lines, demonstrating the integration of technology in the energy sector. The "pathway to power" at AEP converges from various angles, including engineering, technical trades, finance, customer care, and even unconventional roles.The event also featured representatives from the Mid-West Family radio stations, where Jonny Reinhardt, an SMC graduate with a degree in theatre, found his passion in broadcasting.
