Celebrating Latinx Voices in the Gaming Industry: The Latinx Games Festival Comes to Albuquerque

The Latinx Games Festival, an annual celebration of Latino and Hispanic creators in the video game industry, is set to make its debut in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from September 20-22. The event, which will take place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, promises to showcase a diverse array of games, host an esports tournament, and feature live speakers sharing insights into game development.

Amplifying Underrepresented Voices in the Gaming Landscape

Fostering Latinx Representation in the Industry

The Latinx Games Festival was founded with the goal of highlighting the contributions and perspectives of Latino and Hispanic individuals within the video game industry. According to Zippia, Hispanic or Latino individuals currently make up only 8.8% of video game developers, while white individuals account for nearly 68% of the workforce. The festival aims to address this disparity and provide a platform for these underrepresented voices to be heard."Ultimately, we want to show that video games as a young medium exist, and a lot of its history is rooted in Latinos and Latino culture," said Jason Vega, the founder and executive director of the Latinx Games Festival, who has been in the industry for the past 12 years.

Connecting Attendees to Their Cultural Roots

The National Hispanic Cultural Center, which is hosting the event, is equally excited about the opportunity to bring the Latinx Games Festival to Albuquerque. Zack Quintero, the executive director of the NHCC, expressed the center's enthusiasm for the event, stating, "Here, we want people to connect to their Hispanic and Latino roots, and so this is a huge responsibility for us, but one we take with a lot of responsibility and excitement."

Fostering Partnerships and Sponsorships

The Latinx Games Festival has garnered the support of several major gaming companies, including Xbox, Unity, Nintendo, and Amazon Games. Ernie C'deBaca, the president and CEO of the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce, is also partnering with the festival."The representation of the Xbox's and Panics of the world means the world to me as a gamer and as an event organizer, but knowing what they do for the Latino gaming development community — that means the most," Vega said, highlighting the significance of these partnerships in amplifying the voices of Latinx creators.

Fostering a Vibrant Esports Community

In addition to showcasing games by Latino and Hispanic developers, the Latinx Games Festival will also feature an esports tournament, providing a platform for competitive gaming enthusiasts to showcase their skills. This aspect of the event aims to further engage the Latinx gaming community and celebrate their passion for the industry.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Latinx Developers

By shining a spotlight on the achievements and contributions of Latinx individuals in the gaming industry, the Latinx Games Festival hopes to inspire the next generation of Latinx developers and creators. The event's focus on highlighting underrepresented voices and providing a space for Latinx individuals to connect with their cultural roots can serve as a powerful catalyst for aspiring Latinx game developers to pursue their passions and make their mark on the industry. As the Latinx Games Festival makes its debut in Albuquerque, it represents a significant step forward in promoting diversity, inclusion, and representation within the video game industry. By amplifying the voices and stories of Latinx creators, the festival aims to challenge the status quo and pave the way for a more equitable and inclusive gaming landscape.
