The Metro Nashville Police Department responded to a call about a crash involving multiple injuries on Commerce Street and 4th Avenue North around 11:45 p.m. on Thursday. Upon arrival, they found several people injured on the sidewalk, the result of a high-speed car that had mounted the curb and plowed into a group of pedestrians.Leroy Wienke, a victim of the crash, was struck and fell, sustaining a fatal head injury when his head hit the concrete. Wienke's wife, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law were also hit by the car and transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.The driver, 25-year-old John Williams, remained at the scene along with three other passengers in his vehicle. One of the passengers was also injured and taken to Vanderbilt for treatment.

According to the arrest affidavit, officers at the scene detected a strong odor of alcohol on Williams' breath, and he exhibited signs of intoxication, including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and difficulty walking. A search of the vehicle revealed multiple alcoholic beverage bottles, including Reposado tequila, as well as a strong odor of marijuana.Williams was arrested and booked early Friday morning on three counts of reckless endangerment, three counts of vehicular assault, and one count of vehicular homicide by intoxication. He remains in jail on a $105,000 bond.
