Entering the Scotts Valley Cultural and Performing Arts Center is like stepping into a world of artistic wonder. Here, a blinking wall of boomboxes and lights greets you, an extraordinary art installation from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Freestyle Love Supreme” traveling production. This New York relic, adorning the wall of Scotts Valley’s off-off-Broadway theater, sets the tone with its vibrant artistic energy. It’s as if the very essence of theater courses through the veins of this organization, just like a beating heart.
Impressive Feats in the Production
One of the most remarkable aspects of this production is the use of a pit orchestra to provide live music for the songs. The combination of piano, bass, drums, percussion, flute, and saxophone accompanies the characters on their whimsical journey. Live music adds an extra layer of artistry, like a homemade bread sandwich - light and fluffy, enhancing the overall palatability of the production. The ensemble in the production is truly majestic. Sam Machado as Frog, front and center, and the entire cast in SPVA’s “A Year With Frog and Toad” showcase their considerable talents. At once heartwarming and funny, this duo embodies the spirit of friendship that the characters are known for. David Jackson performs an interpretive dance to inspire his garden to grow, epitomizing the quality of warm surrealism. It was a remarkable artistic feat to make kids fall in love with these two creatures, usually associated with warts and cursed princes, and Machado and Jackson capture the essence perfectly. The cast of animals rounds out the production with their animalistic loveliness. The gorgeous scarlet flock of birds serves as a chorus to the seasons. Sandi Lewandowski as the downright funny and uber-cute Snail revels in her absurd mission of delivering mail. The ensemble includes Turtle, Mouse, Lizard, Mother Frog, Father Frog, Young Frog, Large and Terrible Frog, a scurry of squirrels, a labor of moles, a swarm of bees, and a school of fish. The costume designers, Mibs Somerville and Juanita Gunter, transform the stage into a world of creative imagination.Choreography and Set Design
Shannon Marie McDonough’s choreography moves each scene along seamlessly, making the musical into an extended dance piece. With clever set design, the graceful action resolves into tableaus that will remind viewers familiar with the books of their famous illustrations. For example, when Frog and Toad ride a sled down the hill with their amphibious legs hilariously splayed as they try and fail to negotiate the speed of their descent, it’s a moment that will stay with you.Direction and Quality of the Musical
Under Cindy Gorsky’s skillful and passionate direction, this company of creatives has built a charming production of a heartwarming musical. If you’re looking for wholesome live theater that your children will enjoy, “A Year with Frog and Toad” is an excellent choice. The attention to detail, from the live music to the costume design and choreography, makes this musical a true delight. It’s a testament to the talent and passion of the entire team at Scotts Valley Performing Arts. Cheers to them for presenting such a quality musical!
