Calvary Day Looks to Secure Top Playoff Seed
Calvary Day, the region champion with an 8-0 record, is set to face off against Long County, who currently sits at 6-2 in the region. While Long County had a chance to challenge for the region title, a narrow loss to SE Bulloch dashed those hopes. Calvary Day, led by veteran coach Mark Stroud, is focused on maintaining its No. 4 ranking in the private school power rankings, which would secure a first-round bye and the potential to host playoff games in Savannah.Sophomore quarterback James Mobley IV has been a revelation for the Cavaliers, throwing for 1,927 yards and 26 touchdowns with just two interceptions. The offense is also bolstered by the dynamic duo of UGA commit Thomas Blackshear and Doopah Coleman, who have combined for 1,396 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns. Sophomore running back Ca'Den Jones has also been a valuable contributor, rushing for 412 yards and seven scores.On the defensive side, the Cavaliers are led by senior tackle Buddy Mathis Jr., who has committed to LSU, and senior linebacker Cutter Powell, who has 6.5 sacks and 73 tackles. Head coach Antwain Turner, in his 20th season, is excited for the opportunity to showcase the school's new facilities and the team's talent.The Blazers' rushing attack is led by the speedy Assir Best, who has 745 yards and 17 total touchdowns, and the bruising style of junior Jordan Cheever, who has 656 yards and seven scores. Freshman quarterback Jordan Turner, the son of the head coach, has thrown for 999 yards and six touchdowns, with junior receiver Raleigh Wesley being his primary target with 30 catches for 526 yards and three scores.The new field at Bethesda Academy will feature temporary bleachers for the playoff game, with plans for permanent bleachers, a press box, and a field house to be completed before the start of next season. While New Hampstead won't be participating in the postseason, the Phoenix are determined to close out their season on a positive note as they travel to face Ware County. This game will be the final high school contest for a senior class led by star quarterback Ra'Shawn Truell and standout receiver Kamari Maxwell, who recently committed to play at Austin Peay.Truell has had an impressive season, throwing for 2,532 yards and 26 touchdowns, while Maxwell has been his primary target, hauling in 69 catches for 1,073 yards and 12 scores. The duo will be looking to light up the scoreboard one last time as they bid farewell to their high school careers.Ware County, the No. 2 seed from Region 1-4A, will be hosting Tucker in the first round of the playoffs. The Gators will be looking to use this final regular-season game as a tune-up for their postseason push.
