The ambitious expansion of Sarasota County’s 17th Street Park into a state-of-the-art regional sports complex is now scheduled to commence in early 2025, with an anticipated opening in late 2026. This multi-million dollar project aims to transform the existing park into a premier athletic hub, featuring numerous new facilities and fields designed to accommodate various sports activities. The development has faced some delays due to permitting requirements but remains on track for completion within the next two years. Officials anticipate that this enhanced park will significantly boost local sports events and tourism.

Revolutionizing Sports Infrastructure with Modern Facilities

The first phase of the project will introduce a comprehensive array of sports fields tailored for different age groups and sports disciplines. Eight youth softball fields, three adult softball fields, and four multipurpose artificial turf fields will cater to diverse sporting needs. Additionally, specialized fields for football, soccer, lacrosse, and other team sports will enhance the park's versatility. This substantial upgrade from the current setup, which includes only four softball and two soccer fields, promises to elevate the park's status as a leading venue for competitive athletics.

In-depth planning has ensured that each field is meticulously designed to meet high standards. Kimley-Horn and Fawley Bryant Architecture have collaborated to create functional yet aesthetically pleasing spaces. The park's strategic location between Honore Avenue and Beneva Road, near key attractions like the Bobby Jones Golf Complex and Circus Hammock, positions it as a central hub for recreational activities. Three entrances along 17th Street provide convenient access, while the park's integration into the Legacy Trail and Nathan Benderson Park connector enhances its connectivity. Traffic considerations have been integrated into the design, with an additional entrance to manage vehicle flow efficiently during peak times.

Pete Harvey, director of sports for Visit Sarasota, envisions the revamped park becoming a top destination for college and youth softball tournaments.
