His work on seminal comedy Veep earned him widespread acclaim and two Emmy nominations (and one win) for his role on Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso. The Matchbox Project - A Fusion of Entertainment

Matchbox, a toy brand first created in 1953 and acquired by Mattel in 1997, is now getting a live-action makeover. Sam Hargrave, the helmer behind the Extraction action movies, is at the helm, directing the feature that also has Jessica Biel on board. The story is being kept under wraps, adding an air of mystery to the project. The screenplay is by David Coggeshall, who wrote the action comedy The Family Plan for Apple, and Jonathan Tropper, the author and scribe who wrote the Ryan Reynolds action-adventure feature The Adam Project. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce alongside Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films and Jules Daly. This collaboration of talented individuals is set to bring a unique blend of action and comedy to the screen.

The Origins of Matchbox

According to lore, automotive enthusiast Jack Odell designed the first car for his daughter. The condition was that the toy had to be small enough to fit in a matchbox if she was allowed to take it to school. When her school friends also began demanding a “matchbox car,” an iconic brand was born. This story adds a touch of nostalgia and charm to the Matchbox brand, making it even more appealing. The acquisition by Mattel in 1997 further solidified its position in the toy market. Now, with the live-action adaptation, it is set to reach a whole new audience and create a lasting impact.
