After over 10 months of a labor strike, SAG-AFTRA has announced an initial agreement with major video game companies. This tentative deal comes after prolonged negotiations focused on the Interactive Media Agreement, which covers voice and performance-capture talent in the gaming industry. The union emphasized that work stoppages will persist until a formal suspension agreement is finalized. The deal addresses concerns about artificial intelligence's potential impact on performers' livelihoods and includes other significant gains for members.

On Monday night, SAG-AFTRA revealed progress toward resolving the dispute, though specific terms of the new agreement remain undisclosed. The union’s National Board will review the tentative deal before presenting it to its membership for ratification. Crucial issues during these negotiations revolved around the role of artificial intelligence in the gaming industry, as well as securing fair compensation and protections for performers involved in voice and motion capture.

Throughout the past year, discussions between SAG-AFTRA and participating companies were sporadic, leading to a contractless period since November 2022. In July 2024, the union initiated a strike against signatories of the Interactive Media Agreement. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA's National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, expressed gratitude for the perseverance shown by performers and negotiation committee members throughout this challenging time.

The organizations involved in these negotiations include prominent entities such as Activision Productions, Disney Character Voices, Electronic Arts Productions, and WB Games. These companies represent some of the most influential names in the global gaming sector. According to Fran Drescher, SAG-AFTRA President, the newly secured arrangement marks a positive step forward but acknowledges that future negotiations will continue to refine and enhance conditions for performers.
