The food pantry in Vega traces its roots back to 2009. Community members saw the gap in providing for those in need and transformed a Sunday school room into a functional food pantry. It has since been serving the elderly and the working poor in the community, making a significant difference in their lives.
As Janie Axe, a volunteer, shares, "This used to be a Sunday school room and we made a food pantry out of it. And it helps very many, needy people." This simple act of repurposing a space has had a profound impact on the community.
The food pantry focuses on serving two key groups - the elderly and the working poor. Linda Wagner, the director, explains, "We have a lot of families that have young children and their income isn’t quite enough and so we help bridge that gap of food." By providing essential food supplies, they are ensuring that these individuals and families have the sustenance they need.
Wagner further emphasizes the importance of their work, stating, "We also get help from the schools around here. Vega, Adrian and Wildorado schools donate, but the High Plains Food Bank, that’s where we get most of our food from." These partnerships play a crucial role in their ability to serve the community.
Wagner highlights the significance of their partnerships, stating, "We are lucky to have these partnerships because we wouldn’t be able to serve the community. And nobody wants to see a child be hungry. They get food at school, but they need food at home too." These collaborations ensure that the food pantry can continue to meet the needs of those in need.
As Axe adds, "Well, God teaches us that we need to give and help people. And I think it’s very important to help needy people, or any anyone actually." The sense of community and giving is at the heart of what they do.
Wagner also emphasizes the importance of teaching kids to serve and volunteer. She says, "It’s important to teach our kids to serve, to volunteer and with the food drive we have around here, the kids are learning to volunteer and to give to others." By involving the younger generation, they are creating a cycle of giving and helping.
This local food pantry in Vega is not just about providing food; it's about making a difference in people's lives and creating a more compassionate community.
