Rivian R2 Performance Debuts as First Trim Available, Priced at $57,990

When Rivian unveiled its R2 electric SUV last year, it announced an ambitious starting price of $45,000. While that figure remains a future target, the initial release will focus on the more premium R2 Performance variant, set to hit the market this spring. The broader range of R2 models, including the entry-level option, will gradually become available through 2027.

Rivian R2 Performance: A Closer Look at the Launch Edition

The highly anticipated Rivian R2 Performance, the first model in the R2 series to be released, carries a starting price of $57,990. This dynamic electric SUV is equipped with a powerful dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system, generating an impressive 656 horsepower. Performance enthusiasts will appreciate its rapid acceleration, reaching 60 miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds. Furthermore, the R2 Performance is projected to offer an estimated driving range exceeding 300 miles on a single charge.

Standard features on the R2 Performance include striking 21-inch Sport wheels, an advanced semi-active suspension system, and robust tow hooks, complemented by distinctive yellow brake calipers and accents. For those seeking additional customization, optional upgrades such as 20-inch Adventure wheels, a spare tire, and a comprehensive tow package are available. For a limited period, a special Launch Package will also be offered, featuring an exclusive key fob, the tow package, and the unique 'Launch Green' paint option.

Following the R2 Performance, Rivian plans to introduce the R2 Premium in early 2027, positioned as a mid-tier offering with a starting price of $53,990. This version will feature two motors producing 500 horsepower, achieving 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds. It shares many features with the Performance model but foregoes the semi-active suspension, coming standard with 20-inch wheels.

The more accessible R2 Standard models will follow, with the Long Range variant expected in the first half of 2027, starting at $47,900. This version will be powered by a single rear-wheel-drive motor delivering 350 horsepower, capable of reaching 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and offering over 320 miles of range. It will feature 19-inch wheels as standard, with 20-inch wheels and all-wheel drive available as options. Finally, the $45,000 entry-level R2 Standard, featuring a single rear-wheel-drive motor and more than 265 miles of range, is slated for release in late 2027.

In terms of dimensions, the Rivian R2 stands 66.9 inches tall, 84.7 inches wide (including mirrors), and 185.9 inches long. Its height is slightly less than a Bronco Sport, and its length is about three inches shorter than a four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. The R2 boasts a ground clearance of 9.6 inches, just 0.1 inches shy of the Wrangler Unlimited Sport. Its off-road capabilities are further enhanced by a 25-degree approach angle, a 26-degree departure angle, and a 20.6-degree breakover angle. Inside, the R2 offers a versatile cargo capacity of up to 90.1 cubic feet, with 28.7 cubic feet available behind the rear seats.

The phased rollout of the Rivian R2, starting with its most expensive Performance trim, highlights a strategic approach to market entry. While the delay of the more affordable models may test some consumers' patience, the initial offering of a high-performance, well-equipped electric SUV at a competitive price point under $60,000 could be a smart move.
