Riot Games to Discontinue League of Legends Classic Service

Riot Games recently made a significant announcement regarding the future of its retro offering, League of Legends Classic. Despite a brief run, the company has decided to sunset the service, with plans to potentially reintroduce it later as an enhanced event mode. This decision comes as player engagement shifted back to the main League of Legends ecosystem.

The Journey's End: Classic League's Farewell and Future Promise

The Swift Departure of League of Legends Classic

Riot Games has declared its intention to cease operations for League of Legends Classic by January 2027. This revelation might come as a surprise to many, considering the game’s initial release was merely in July of this year. After a mere three months, it appears the player base has largely moved on to other gaming experiences.

Riot's Rationale Behind the Shutdown

In an official statement posted on the League of Legends website, Riot confirmed upcoming modifications to Classic, coinciding with the launch of Season 3 Act 2. This primary change involves the permanent closure of the service. Riot explicitly stated that "League Classic will be accessible until the conclusion of Season 3 in 2026, marking the end of its current iteration," which translates to a January 2027 shutdown. The company explained its decision, noting, "While many players enjoyed revisiting the early days with Classic, most have since reverted to other facets of League." This, while unfortunate for Classic, is positive news for the overall League of Legends franchise, indicating player loyalty within the broader gaming universe rather than a complete exodus. This contrasts sharply with World of Warcraft's Classic mode, which successfully lured back many disaffected players.

A Glimmer of Hope for Classic's Return

Despite the impending shutdown, Riot isn't completely abandoning Classic. The developer expressed aspirations to "reintroduce Classic at a later date, likely as an event mode incorporating refinements and new features." The company also committed to sharing insights gained from Classic's performance, encompassing both its triumphs and shortcomings. This knowledge is expected to bolster any future versions of Classic.

Continued Updates Until Final Closure

Even with its expiration date set, Riot is not entirely disengaging from Classic. New champions such as Mordekaiser, Yorick, Hecarim, and Lucian are slated for release in patch 26.21, with further additions including Volibear, Urgot, and Udyr through patch 26.23. Players will also receive refunds for any Classic-exclusive items that will become unusable, and the Act 2 Classic Battle Pass will offer only a free progression track. Moving forward, the Classic store will exclusively feature champions, runes, and rune pages.

Regional Access Restrictions for Classic Players

A significant alteration for Classic players is the imposition of restricted playtimes. To mitigate extended queue durations across various servers, Riot will transition Classic to specific operational windows. Players located in Korea, Latin America North, Latin America South, Taiwan, Vietnam, Turkey, Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Russia will only be able to access Classic during weekdays from 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. server time, and on weekends from Saturday 10:00 a.m. to Sunday 1:00 a.m. server time.
