The VivaOliva program, launched by the PepsiCo Foundation, focuses on promoting regenerative agriculture among local producers. With a substantial investment of €300,000, this effort aims to bolster both the economic viability and environmental sustainability of olive oil production. By targeting 150 farmers in one of Spain's most economically fragile regions, the project addresses critical challenges such as water scarcity and climate change impacts.

This transformative endeavor offers a comprehensive support system for participating farmers. Experts in agronomy will provide tailored guidance, while financial aid and educational workshops will introduce modern techniques that enhance soil health, conserve water resources, and promote biodiversity. Practices like compost fertilization, cover cropping, and infiltration trenches are expected to lead to higher-quality olive oil yields. Additionally, the program seeks to engage younger individuals in farming, presenting it as an attractive career option to counteract rural depopulation trends and ensure long-term industry stability.

Archana Jagannathan, chief sustainability officer at PepsiCo Europe, emphasized the importance of building trust and collaboration with local communities to achieve meaningful outcomes. She highlighted the integration of traditional knowledge with cutting-edge practices as a cornerstone of the initiative. Over time, these efforts are anticipated to result in cost reductions and significant environmental improvements within three to five years, with full transition and profitability expected in five to eight years. Aligning with global demand for extra virgin olive oil, driven by Mediterranean diet trends, VivaOliva not only meets regional needs but also taps into international market opportunities. Andrea Pont, director of the PepsiCo Foundation in Europe, underscored the program's commitment to empowering communities and fostering sustainable agricultural practices for future generations.
