A former Walmart store, located near King and Bethel streets, will soon transform into Forte, an expansive pickleball facility that promises to bring new life and excitement to downtown Honolulu. A New Era Begins for Honolulu's Urban Landscape

During the crisp days of early winter, a significant change is taking place in downtown Honolulu. In January, the 80,000-square-foot space previously occupied by Walmart will reopen as Forte, a state-of-the-art pickleball complex. Avalon Group, which acquired the building last year, envisions this project as a catalyst for bringing people together and supporting local businesses. Ben Dookchitra, Chief Investment Officer of Avalon, emphasized the importance of creating spaces where the community can gather and thrive. "We wanted to provide an engaging environment that complements the existing offerings," he explained.

The facility, set to debut on January 20th, will initially offer six indoor, air-conditioned pickleball courts, with plans to expand further. Residents like Casey Carter from Honolulu are enthusiastic about the addition. "This will be a fantastic way to stay active and connect with neighbors," Carter remarked. Peter Knapman from Kaka'ako also expressed optimism, noting that the variety of activities will enhance the appeal of downtown living. "I'm excited to see what they've got planned; it's going to be a great asset for everyone," he added.

Beyond Forte, Avalon continues to work on attracting new businesses while supporting established ones. The company's efforts align with ongoing revitalization initiatives involving various stakeholders. Last September, WKF completed a residential conversion project at 1060 Bishop Street, adding 52 new housing units. Additionally, a public forum scheduled for January 15th at the YWCA Hawaii will invite community input on future improvements.
