In preparation for the 2025-26 season, Coach Chris Jans emphasized the necessity for size and improved rebounding skills within his roster. Despite a commendable finish with a 21-13 record and a third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, the Bulldogs have yet to secure an NCAA tournament victory since 2008. Key departures include power forward Cameron Matthews, center Michael Nwoko, and forward KeShawn Murphy, necessitating strategic recruitment to fill these roles.
The incoming transfer class includes two power forwards—Achor Achor and Brandon Walker—and one center, Quincy Ballard. Ballard, transitioning from Wichita State, demonstrated remarkable potential last season with averages of 10 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game. His presence could significantly enhance the team's defensive strategies and overall rebounding efficiency, which ranked 130th nationally last year.
Additionally, Mississippi State has welcomed two highly regarded four-star centers, Tee Bartlett and Jamarion Davis-Fleming, through their freshman class. Coach Jans expressed excitement over acquiring a player capable of protecting the lane and providing robust support on defense, qualities he believes were lacking in previous seasons.
Offensively, the return of Josh Hubbard, a two-time All-SEC guard, injects crucial momentum into the team’s three-point shooting efforts. However, consistent and efficient shooting remains a priority. Last season, MSU struggled with a 31.4% success rate from beyond the arc, despite being among the league leaders in attempts.
