A renewed vigor has returned to the courts of Raritan High School as Rory Clayton, head coach of the boys' tennis team, resumes his role after a harrowing health journey. Diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease (PKD), Clayton faced life-threatening complications that sidelined him from coaching during the 2024 season. Thanks to a timely intervention by his wife Carla and an extraordinary act of friendship from Ryan McAndrews, who donated a kidney, Clayton is back on the sidelines, filled with gratitude and passion for teaching and coaching. In early 2023, Rory Clayton began experiencing severe symptoms linked to PKD, a genetic condition he inherited from his father, who passed away in 2011 due to its complications. As the disease progressed, Clayton found himself undergoing regular dialysis treatments, which drained both his physical energy and emotional spirit. His ability to coach was compromised, leaving him heartbroken over missing out on what had been a cherished part of his life for two decades. The situation seemed bleak until September 2024 when Ryan McAndrews, a lifelong friend, stepped forward as a donor, providing Clayton with a new lease on life.
The decision to undergo dialysis was pivotal in Clayton’s battle against PKD. With kidney function dropping below 3%, doctors warned that without immediate action, Clayton might have only weeks left. Despite this grim prognosis, Clayton remained determined to stay active in his professional roles, continuing to teach literature while temporarily stepping away from coaching. His absence was felt deeply by students and players alike, many of whom grew close under his guidance.
Ryan McAndrews’ involvement came as a revelation. Testing revealed that his kidney matched Clayton’s needs almost perfectly—a rare occurrence between non-relatives. Although initially hesitant about accepting such a generous offer, Clayton ultimately embraced it, acknowledging the depth of their friendship and mutual respect.
