Honoring a Pioneering Athlete and Coach

From Alabama to Southern Illinois and Back Home

Chris Giles' basketball journey began in Alabama, where he led Parker High School to the AHSAA Class 4A boys' basketball championship in 1975. After a season with Southern Illinois, the 6-10 forward returned to Birmingham, determined to help establish the UAB men's basketball program.

Blazing a Trail for the Fledgling UAB Program

In his second season at UAB and the Blazers' third season in existence, Giles played a pivotal role in the team's remarkable run to the Sweet 16 of the 1981 NCAA tournament. Under the guidance of coach Gene Bartow, UAB posted a 23-9 record, defeating Western Kentucky and Kentucky before falling to eventual national champion Indiana.

Reaching New Heights: The Elite Eight Appearance

The following season, Giles and the Blazers reached even greater heights. UAB compiled a 25-6 record and advanced to the Elite Eight in the 1982 NCAA tournament. This time, the Blazers defeated Indiana before bowing out with a 75-68 loss to Louisville.

Giles' Impressive Individual Accolades

Across those two tournament seasons, Giles averaged an impressive 10.8 points and 7.7 rebounds in 63 games for UAB. His stellar play earned him a second-team All-Sun Belt selection for the 1980-81 season and a first-team nod for the 1981-82 season.

The Professional Pursuit and Coaching Endeavors

Despite being selected by the New Jersey Nets in the fifth round of the 1982 NBA Draft, Giles never played in an NBA regular-season game. However, he did find success as a professional, playing for the Wisconsin Flyers of the Continental Basketball Association. After his playing career, Giles spent three seasons as an assistant coach at UAB and three seasons as the head coach at Miles College, further cementing his legacy in the basketball community.
