In a thrilling display of defensive prowess and offensive efficiency, the North Tama Redhawks secured a commanding 51-28 victory over GMG in an Iowa Star Conference basketball match held at GMG High School on Friday. The Redhawks' relentless full-court pressure set the tone early, leading to a decisive first quarter advantage that they maintained throughout the game. Key performances by Ava Breakenridge and Gabby Seda, along with solid contributions from their teammates, ensured North Tama's dominance. Meanwhile, GMG faced challenges in adapting to North Tama’s aggressive style but showed resilience in the second half.

The North Tama Redhawks entered the contest determined to leverage their defensive strengths. Coach Harold Youngblut emphasized the importance of pressing to keep his team engaged mentally and physically. This strategy paid off immediately as the Redhawks forced multiple turnovers in the opening minutes, establishing a significant lead of 16-2 by the end of the first quarter. "We had to press to stay sharp," Youngblut explained. "Our players responded well, and it kept them focused."

Ava Breakenridge was the standout performer for the Redhawks, scoring a game-high 17 points. Her ability to penetrate the defense and finish strong under pressure was instrumental in maintaining North Tama's momentum. Gabby Seda added 10 points, while Shawna Cibula contributed eight points, and Gabby Velasco chipped in with seven. These contributions were crucial in extending the lead to 29-11 by halftime.

North Tama's defensive tactics were equally impressive. They effectively neutralized GMG's key player, Makayla Pendleton, limiting her impact in the post. The Redhawks' guards also excelled in disrupting GMG's ball-handling, which further hindered the Bulldogs' offensive flow. As the game progressed, North Tama continued to dominate, keeping their lead steady despite occasional bursts from GMG.

GMG, led by head coach Devon Diederichs, faced difficulties in replicating North Tama's physicality during practice. However, the young Bulldogs demonstrated improvement in ball movement once they settled into the half-court offense. Brooklyn Jones and Arianna Pierce each scored eight points for GMG, while Skyler Murty added six. Despite the loss, Diederichs acknowledged North Tama's skill and praised his team's efforts to adapt.

The Redhawks now find themselves tied for second place in the Iowa Star South division following BCLUW's win over Baxter. Their upcoming schedule includes a non-conference game against Tripoli on Monday. For GMG, the focus shifts to improving their finishing skills and building on the positive aspects shown in the second half. Both teams will look to build on this performance in their respective upcoming matches.
