Red Sox, Diamondbacks trade proposal: All-Stars on the move

The Arizona Diamondbacks, a team that had made it to the World Series in 2023, found themselves missing the postseason in 2024. This setback led them to consider moving on from some of their star players in order to better position themselves for the future. FanSided's Jacob Mountz proposed a trade that would send two Diamondbacks All-Stars to the Boston Red Sox.

Trade Proposal: Diamondbacks and Red Sox

In this proposed trade, the Diamondbacks would receive right fielder Wilyer Abreu, shortstop Marcelo Mayer, and catcher Kyle Teel. On the other side, the Red Sox would get second baseman Ketel Marte and right-handed pitcher Zac Gallen.

Gallen's Impact

Zac Gallen was a significant piece for the Diamondbacks. In 2023, he finished third in Cy Young Award voting, demonstrating his exceptional pitching skills. However, in 2024, he took a step back, having the second-highest ERA of his career in 28 starts. The Diamondbacks might see the value in trading him before his performance continues to decline. He is set to become a free agent after the 2025 season and is represented by Scott Boras. This means he is likely to seek the best offer available, which may not be with the Diamondbacks.

Marte's Potential

Ketel Marte, on the other hand, is a 31-year-old switch-hitting player who was an All-Star for the second time in his career last season. His presence alone could have a significant impact on the Red Sox lineup. Imagine a Red Sox lineup with Marte sandwiched between Jarren Duran and Rafael Devers, with Triston Casas batting cleanup. His performance in the 2024 season, despite an ankle sprain that derailed him in August and September, was remarkable. He slashed.292/.372/.560 with a career-high 36 home runs and finished third in NL MVP voting, collecting his first Silver Slugger. Moreover, he is signed through 2027 with a club option for 2028, bringing a ton of defensive versatility as he can play either middle-infield spot and various outfield positions.

Abreu's Achievements

Wilyer Abreu had a successful first full season in the big leagues. He hit 15 home runs and won a Gold Glove, showcasing his offensive and defensive abilities.More MLB: Yankees predicted to spend $189 million on Brewers star after losing Juan Soto
