Empowering Youth, Transforming Lives: Big Brothers Big Sisters' Vital Mission

In the heart of Indianapolis, a remarkable organization is making a profound impact on the lives of young people. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana (BBBSCI) is embarking on a transformative journey, fueled by the power of mentorship and the unwavering commitment to nurturing the potential of every child they serve.

Unlocking Brighter Futures, One Mentor at a Time

Forging Unbreakable Bonds

The story of Maggie Pollard and her "Little" Aerail "T" is a testament to the life-changing power of the BBBSCI program. Their journey, which began nine years ago, has blossomed into an unbreakable bond that will last a lifetime. Pollard, who was just 22 years old when she first met the then-8-year-old Aerail, has become a guiding light in her mentee's life, providing unwavering support and unconditional love. Aerail, who had faced numerous challenges, found in Pollard a confidante, a role model, and a source of strength. "Aerial means the world to me," Pollard shares, her voice brimming with emotion. "She has not had the easiest life. She's had so much that she has gone through, and she has been able to stay strong and persevere, and I am so proud of her. I truly feel in a lot of ways Big Brothers Big Sisters has kind of saved her life."

Bridging the Gap, Empowering Youth

For Aerail, the impact of BBBSCI has been transformative. "You know sometimes I feel alone. I can't go to my mother; I can't go to my father. I can't go to my siblings. I have to turn to her or without Big Brothers Big Sisters showing me her, I'm going to be completely honest, I wouldn't be here," she confesses. The organization's ability to connect vulnerable youth with caring mentors has been a lifeline, providing a sense of belonging and support that is often missing in their lives. As Aerail prepares to graduate from Heron High School, her dreams of studying Special Education, Zoology, and Veterinary medicine are fueled by the unwavering belief in her own potential, nurtured by the guidance of her Big Sister.

Expanding the Reach, Amplifying the Impact

The demand for BBBSCI's services is growing, and the organization is committed to meeting this need. With an annual budget of nearly $3 million, the organization relies heavily on donations and fundraising events to sustain its programs. Caitlin Bain, the Chief Development Officer, emphasizes the importance of financial resources, stating, "The demand and need are there for services, and the only way we move that forward is through financial resources." One of the organization's biggest fundraisers, "The Main Event" at Lucas Oil Stadium, is expected to generate around $400,000 to directly benefit the program.

Recruiting the Mentors, Transforming Lives

BBBSCI's mission extends beyond just providing mentorship; it also focuses on recruiting and training the mentors who will guide these young lives. The organization is actively seeking male mentors, recognizing the crucial role they play in the lives of young boys who may lack positive male role models. By expanding its pool of dedicated volunteers, BBBSCI aims to match even more "Littles" with their "Bigs," ensuring that no child is left without the support and guidance they need to thrive.

Investing in the Future, Empowering the Next Generation

The impact of BBBSCI's work extends far beyond the individual lives it touches. By investing in the youth of today, the organization is paving the way for a brighter future, one where young people are empowered to overcome challenges, pursue their dreams, and become the leaders and change-makers of tomorrow. As Pollard eloquently states, "Sometimes when you are just giving money it can feel like you're not making a difference, but it truly is." With the support of the community, BBBSCI continues to transform lives, one mentor-mentee relationship at a time.
