Bridging the Gap: Radiant Life's Mission to Feed the Hungry
A Sanctuary for the Struggling
Every Wednesday, the doors of Radiant Life Community Church swing open, welcoming a steady stream of individuals and families seeking sustenance. Among them is Allison Reisma, a single mother from Climbing Hill, Iowa, who has found solace and support in the church's outreach efforts. "It's very beneficial for my family," Reisma shares, her voice tinged with gratitude. "Sometimes I have to choose if I'm going to put gas in my car so I can go to work or buy groceries that week."Reisma's story is not unique. The economic pressures of the past year have left many families teetering on the edge, forced to make difficult choices between basic necessities. "I can get some groceries, but it comes down to weekly living off my paycheck, week by week," she explains. "I don't qualify for any assistance, because I make too much, but I'm still broke after I pay all my bills."Filling the Gaps: Radiant Life's Multifaceted Approach
Recognizing the growing need in their community, the team at Radiant Life Community Church has stepped up to the challenge. "We have lots of produce and bread that people can come and take, what they can use, and they can get a hot meal," says Laura Cvrk, the Director of the church's Food Pantry. The pantry's reach has expanded exponentially over the years, serving between 250 and 320 individuals each week – a far cry from the 35-40 people it assisted a decade ago. Last year alone, the church served an astounding 7,303 hot meals, and they've already surpassed that number in 2023.But Radiant Life's support extends beyond just providing food. The church also offers a monthly access to their closet, as well as a drive-thru pantry, making it easier for families to get the assistance they need. "I know that there are people that need help, and there's so often that many people can be one paycheck away from really struggling," Cvrk reflects.Volunteers: The Heartbeat of Radiant Life
Powering this remarkable effort are the dedicated volunteers who have answered the call to serve. "With the way the economy is these days, it's really hard to pay your bills and to feed your family, and this just makes it so much easier for families," says Aaron Winters, a volunteer at the pantry. These volunteers are the unsung heroes, working tirelessly to collect donations, sort through the goods, and ensure that every visitor leaves with a full stomach and a sense of hope. "It's exciting to be able to help people and this is stuff that would it. It was extra. It would have gone in the dumpster, but it's still very good," Cvrk enthuses.Partnering for Impact: Radiant Life and the Foodbank of Siouxland
Radiant Life Community Church has forged a strong partnership with the Foodbank of Siouxland, leveraging their resources and expertise to maximize the impact of their outreach. Together, they work to distribute the donated food to the community, ensuring that no one is left behind."It helps so much," Reisma says, speaking on behalf of the countless families who have found solace in the church's generosity. The partnership between Radiant Life and the Foodbank has been a game-changer, allowing them to reach more people and provide a lifeline to those in need.As the church looks ahead to the busy season, they are actively seeking additional volunteers and food donations to keep their shelves stocked and their mission alive. The need in the community is ever-present, and Radiant Life is committed to being a beacon of hope, one meal at a time.
