Scranton Prep's victory was bittersweet, as they went on to finish as the PIAA runner-up, with District 1 titlist Lower Moreland claiming the PIAA championship in a close 3-2 decision. Quaker Valley's players and coaches can take solace in the fact that they pushed their opponents to the limit and left everything on the court.
Quaker Valley's girls tennis program has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the WPIAL and PIAA landscapes. Their 2024 season may have ended in disappointment, but the lessons learned and the experience gained will undoubtedly fuel their drive to reach even greater heights in the future.
Lily Baker, a freshman defender/midfielder for Quaker Valley, scored the game-winning goal as the second-seeded Quakers edged out seventh-seeded Deer Lakes, 1-0, in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Sewickley Academy's senior forward Katherine Varghese also found the back of the net to lift the fifth-seeded Panthers to a 1-0 victory over 13th-seeded Aquinas Academy in the Class A quarterfinals.
These clutch performances showcased the depth of talent within the Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy programs, as both teams continued their impressive postseason runs. The Quakers, led by freshman goalkeeper Ava Hajok, took an 11-game unbeaten streak and 14 shutouts into their semifinal matchup against sixth-seeded North Catholic, while Sewickley Academy, with senior Marie Bigi in goal, faced top-seeded Springdale.
From Quaker Valley, senior defender Mia Modrovich, sophomore midfielder Annabel Miko, and junior midfielder Ari Bosh were all named to the all-WPIAL team. Sewickley Academy's Katherine Varghese, Marie Bigi, and sophomore midfielder Emma Eannarino also earned the prestigious all-WPIAL distinction.
On the boys' side, Quaker Valley's senior forward Colin Benge and junior defender Tanner Shultz were selected for the all-WPIAL team, as was Sewickley Academy's junior midfielder Finn Wentz. Eden Christian's senior midfielder Cole King also received the all-WPIAL honor.
The Quakers' success on the volleyball court, coupled with their impressive performances in tennis and soccer, underscores the depth and versatility of the athletic programs at Quaker Valley. As the school year progresses, all eyes will be on the Quakers as they strive to add more hardware to their growing collection of accolades.
