Protest Erupts Over Food Lion's Delayed Cage-Free Egg Commitment

A group of around a dozen activists gathered outside the Food Lion corporate headquarters in Salisbury to protest against Ahold Delhaize USA’s alleged failure to honor its commitment regarding cage-free eggs. The parent company had initially pledged to achieve a 100% cage-free shell egg assortment by 2025, a promise made back in 2016. However, last year, the timeline was modified due to industry challenges, pushing the target date to 2032. Demonstrators Rally Against Broken Promises in Salisbury

In a golden autumn afternoon, despite the rain, more than a dozen demonstrators assembled at the entrance of the Food Lion executive office building located on Harrison Road in Salisbury. Led by Marissa Garst, an organizer representing The Humane League, the protestors aimed to draw attention to Ahold Delhaize USA's unfulfilled pledge concerning the living conditions of egg-laying hens. Back in 2016, Delhaize America announced plans to transition all private brand eggs to cage-free status first, followed by a complete shift across all product lines by 2025.

However, recent updates from the company cite external factors such as an egg supply shortage exacerbated by avian flu outbreaks and rising consumer prices as reasons for extending the deadline to 2032. Protesters delivered over 30,000 petitions urging the company to adhere to its original commitment. According to Garst, many former customers feel betrayed by what they perceive as misleading marketing practices, particularly regarding labels like "natural" or "farm fresh" used on caged hen eggs.

Michael Windsor, senior director of corporate engagement with The Humane League, emphasized that besides being inhumane, caged systems pose significant health risks. USDA data highlights that most bird losses due to avian flu occurred within these confined environments. With strong backing from their customer base, there seems little justification for delaying action further.
