Safeguarding the Integrity of Europe's Food System: A Technological Revolution

In a world where food fraud is on the rise, the European Commission's Joint Research Center (JRC) is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative to enhance the integrity of the EU's food system. By integrating cutting-edge traceability technologies, digital innovations, and authenticity systems into existing safety standards, this ambitious plan promises to ensure that the food consumed by European citizens is safe, authentic, and of the highest quality.

Centralizing Food Fraud Data: A Holistic Approach

While a substantial volume of food chain data is already accessible at European and international levels, these sources are often dispersed and not always interoperable. To address this challenge, the Commission's Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety has launched a new innovative approach that leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze vast amounts of data. This will help detect irregularities that could point to fraud, integrate information related to agri-food fraud, generate early warning signals of potential fraud, and assist in managing suspicious cases.The report also recommends the creation of an independent data trust to facilitate the sharing of food fraud data between the food industry and authorities, incentivizing industrial participation. Additionally, a Public-Private Partnership will be established to promote the adoption of interoperable digital traceability systems by food businesses, allowing data sharing with authorities as needed.

Harnessing the Power of AI and Big Data

The Commission's initiative also includes the development of a well-defined technology roadmap for setting up an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven Information Technology system for food integrity. This project will integrate the European Commission's competencies with relevant datasets, IT experts, and data scientists, combining large data sets and analyzing them with big data tools to enhance the detection and prevention of food fraud.

The Council Conclusions underscore the importance of rapid and effective exchanges of relevant information, appropriate reporting, and close collaboration between authorities within Member States, as well as between Member States and the Commission.
