Last week, Riot Games made a significant revelation - the existence of Project K, their very own real-world trading card game. This timing couldn't be more opportune, riding on the wave of Arcane season 2's success, the enduring popularity of League of Legends, and the current trend of trading card games (TCGs). Now, the developers have shed light on how to actually play this game, and it's no surprise that it incorporates elements from all your beloved TCGs. One crucial aspect to note from the outset is that this is far more than Legends of Runeterra.
Gameplay Insights and Rules
Riot Games' Dave Guskin took to X to share a detailed post about all the rules and regulations. The objective is to capture different battlefield cards. Each captured battlefield earns one point, and maintaining control of the battlefield in each turn adds another point. The first player to reach eight points emerges as the winner, and up to four people can participate in a single game.It seems like a game with a relatively fast pace. However, the winning point isn't obtained by conquering a battlefield directly. Instead, one must hold an existing battlefield to earn that final point or score all battlefields in a single turn.Team Fight Tactics Macao Event and Decks
Riot Games will showcase Project K at its Team Fight Tactics Macao event. Guskin informed that there are four prebuilt decks to choose from, each associated with a different champion. You can select between Jinx, Viktor, Yasuo, or Volibear. Each champion has a distinct combination of traits and abilities, making them unique to play.Decks in Project K are built around a single Champion Legend unit, similar to how Commander decks are constructed in Magic: The Gathering. The decks consist of a maximum of 40 cards, with three copies of any given card allowed. A notable caveat is that the cards must match the color scheme of your champion.Release Timeline and Preorders
Project K is scheduled for release in 2025. Those attending the TFT Macao event will have the opportunity to try their hands at the game. However, it is not expected to be released globally until later in 2025. Preorders are expected to become available in the first few months of the year. This trading card game from Riot Games holds great promise, combining the excitement of League of Legends with the strategic elements of TCGs. It's set to become a must-play for fans of both worlds, offering a unique gaming experience that is sure to captivate players.
