In Gods Must Work, you take on the role of a minor deity working at a heavenly tech company. Your task is to design on-demand worlds for bored gods and goddesses. The gameplay combines turn-based city-building and exploration, with elements inspired by Reus. Humans in the game create cities within borders, gathering resources and completing time-sensitive projects with your assistance.

Ground Texture and Performance

To achieve the stunning ground look, Alexius11 implemented procedural stochastic texturing from Unity Labs. This technique is highly effective without sacrificing performance, avoiding the obvious repetition of tiling. With 8 different texture and normal map combinations, and height information stored in the alpha channel, the shader blends these textures based on vertex colors or the position magnitude for beaches.

The use of batch render groups ensures solid performance even when rendering around 10k objects, saving about 10-20ms. This allows for a smooth and immersive gaming experience.

Availability and Updates

Currently, Gods Must Work is only available on Discord. However, Alexius11 has plans to release it on Steam and set up a GitHub repository in the future. This will make the game more accessible to a wider audience and allow for further development and updates.
