Poughkeepsie Students Embark on Unexpected Hike During Fire Drill
In a unique twist on a routine fire drill, elementary students at a Poughkeepsie school found themselves on an impromptu hike this week. The fire drill at Warring Elementary School on Mansion Street resulted in a planned excursion for the students, as they marched to a nearby building to take shelter in the event of an emergency.Fostering Community Collaboration and Student Safety
Coordinating for Emergency Preparedness
The administration at Warring Elementary School has been working closely with the MHA Dutchess organization, which is undergoing renovations on a building located just 1,000 feet from the school. In the event of a real emergency, the students and staff would have access to the MHA Dutchess building as a safe and secure shelter, helping to reduce the stress and anxiety that children may experience during a crisis."We are a part of this community and we are pleased to have the opportunity to help the school district in this way," said Andrew O'Grady, the CEO of MHA Dutchess. By providing a designated emergency shelter, the collaboration between the school and the organization aims to enhance the overall safety and well-being of the students.Executing the Fire Drill with Precision
During the fire drill, the students demonstrated exemplary behavior as they exited the school in an orderly fashion. Some classes departed through the rear of the building, while others used the front entrance, ultimately lining up and preparing to walk to the MHA Dutchess headquarters.Observing the drill from the rooftop of the MHA Dutchess building, O'Grady was impressed by the students' discipline and organization. "The kids are very well behaved," he remarked, noting the seamless coordination between the classes as they converged in the rear parking lot.Returning to the Classroom Efficiently
Once the fire alarm drill was terminated, the students, organized by classrooms, lined up and marched back to their school. The entire process, from leaving the building to returning, was completed within just five minutes, showcasing the school's efficient emergency response protocols. This unique fire drill not only reinforced the importance of emergency preparedness but also fostered a sense of community collaboration between the school and the local organization. By providing a safe haven for the students, the MHA Dutchess building has become an integral part of the school's emergency plan, ensuring the well-being of the young learners in the event of a crisis.
