Manchester has been hosting the Kids Christmas event for years, with its roots in the Civic Club and later involving the Kiwanis and Lions. Now, it is coordinated solely by the Manchester Lions Club in partnership with Manchester Family Services. However, the success of this event depends on the support of volunteers from the community.
Volunteer and Make a Difference
On Saturday, December 14th, volunteers will gather at the Riverside School Cafeteria at 8:30 am. Families will arrive, and Family Services will provide a list of eligible families. Each child will receive a 'shopping pass' to purchase gifts for their siblings and parents at selected Manchester businesses. Once at the cafeteria, children will be assigned a seating area, enjoy breakfast treats and beverages, and be paired with adult sponsors. As they shop, merchants will record the transactions, and the Lions Club will settle the bills later. After shopping, children will return to the cafeteria to wrap their gifts. At 11 am, pizzas donated by Ollie's will arrive, followed by the arrival of Santa. Santa will draw the names of each participating child, and they can select toys for themselves. Many of the toys come from the Manchester Fire Department's Toy's For Tots program, so supporting them is crucial. The event concludes around noon, and volunteers will clean up the cafeteria. Special thanks go to all the volunteers and donors, including Worth Repeating, the Manchester Fire Department, Masons, Lions, and Manchester Family Services. To volunteer, you can call/text Barry Allen at 734-904-4694 or email pdg.barryrallen@gmail.com.
