Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square has once again come alive with the return of 'Open Streets'. Before the city's beloved Birds took to the field, the area around Rittenhouse and Center City was filled with the sights and sounds of a bustling holiday scene. Santa Claus himself was spotted roaming the streets, spreading joy and cheer. Adrian Sam from Logan Square remarked, "I feel like it’s really good for Philadelphia, it’s good for Center City, especially the retail. Kids come out, parents enjoy themselves, it’s perfect." This concept of closing the streets to foot traffic is making a second appearance during the holiday season, having been a success in September. Delta Ghoshal from Fairmount said, "It’s just a really cool way to see a city road that you get to see in another way, in a slower, more calm scenic way." Jessica Tashman and her friends were sitting right in the middle of Walnut Street, enjoying a bagel for breakfast and taking in the festive atmosphere. Michael Zabrodski, the VP of Operations at Philadelphia Runner, emphasized, "It’s wonderful for the businesses in the community around here. It’s really nice to have Walnut Street, usually very busy with both road and foot traffic, shut down this time of year. It allows shoppers and people out enjoying the holiday season to come in and do a little bit more than just their regular shopping, enjoy the community and enjoy the streets." 'Open Streets' will continue to bring smiles to the faces of many businesses and residents as it returns again next Sunday, December 15.

Holiday Cheer in Rittenhouse Square

Santa Claus's unexpected visit added an extra touch of holiday spirit to Rittenhouse Square. The area was filled with people enjoying the open streets, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It was a sight to behold as families and friends came together to soak in the festive vibes.

Businesses in the vicinity were also reaping the benefits. Philadelphia Runner's VP, Michael Zabrodski, highlighted how the closed streets provided an opportunity for shoppers to engage more with the community and enjoy a unique holiday shopping experience.

Slow and Steady Enjoyment

The slow pace of the open streets allowed people to truly appreciate the beauty of Rittenhouse Square. Instead of the usual hustle and bustle of traffic, there was a sense of calm and tranquility. Delta Ghoshal from Fairmount captured this sentiment perfectly, stating that it was a great way to see the city in a different light.

Jessica Tashman and her friends were among those who relished in this slower pace. Sitting in the middle of Walnut Street, they were able to take their time and enjoy a simple breakfast while surrounded by the holiday decorations.

Business Boost and Community Spirit

The 'Open Streets' concept not only brought joy to the residents but also gave a much-needed boost to local businesses. With the streets closed, shoppers had more time to explore and make additional purchases. Michael Zabrodski emphasized how this helped create a stronger sense of community.

Adrian Sam from Logan Square echoed these sentiments, stating that it was a great opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy the holiday season. The open streets became a gathering place where people could connect and share in the festive spirit.
