On a vibrant Saturday afternoon, the heart of Parkersburg City Park transformed into a lively hub for the LGBTQ community and its supporters. The eighth annual Parkersburg PrideFest, now in its seventh in-person iteration following the pandemic, brought together individuals from all walks of life to celebrate love, diversity, and acceptance. Featuring over 75 vendors, live music performances, and heartfelt gestures such as "mom hugs," the event aimed to foster inclusivity and provide a safe space for everyone. President Jamie Lee McCormick expressed pride in building this gathering, emphasizing its role in offering visibility and joy to those who may not have experienced it growing up.
The day unfolded under sunny skies with an array of activities designed to bring people closer. Around the bandshell, various artists took the stage, including drag queens captivating audiences with their charisma. Among the attendees was Neva Hammond, whose group offered comforting embraces known as "mom hugs." These acts symbolized the event's mission: ensuring every individual feels loved and accepted, regardless of familial circumstances. Isabelle Moore, representing the Wood County Women’s Rights Alliance, highlighted the importance of feminism encompassing all communities. Her organization also provided essential feminine products through Period Pantries around the region.
For many participants, such as Blake from Williamstown, the festival served as both a celebration and an educational opportunity. By interacting with others, Blake hoped to dispel fears associated with unfamiliarity about the LGBTQ community. She encouraged open conversations, reminding people that they likely cherish someone within this demographic. Arthur Rose traveled from Charleston with his husband to participate, reflecting on how challenging life had been without such supportive environments during his youth. He cherished the unity displayed at PrideFest, urging kindness irrespective of one's background.
This year's Parkersburg PrideFest left a lasting impression by uniting thousands of souls in harmony. Through vendor booths showcasing advocacy groups, local businesses, and community organizations, alongside exhilarating performances, the event underscored the significance of embracing differences. As attendees danced, laughed, and shared stories, they reinforced the message that humanity thrives when we recognize our shared values and extend compassion toward each other.
