Witches on the Water: Paddling for a Cause on Cape Cod

In a surprising twist, a group of witches on Cape Cod have traded their brooms for paddles, using their powers for good rather than mischief. This unique group of women has transformed their love of paddleboarding and Halloween into a successful fundraising initiative, donating over $80,000 to local nonprofits in the past two years. Their latest endeavor, the Witches on the Water event, aims to support Dream Day on Cape Cod, a remarkable organization that provides children with serious or life-threatening illnesses a week of camp and healing.

Harnessing the Power of Witchcraft for Good

From Fun to Fundraising

Five years ago, Jo-Ellen Erickson and her friend, Susan Price, decided to don their full witch costumes and go paddleboarding off the coast of Cape Cod, simply for the fun of it. What started as a lighthearted activity quickly gained attention, with people inquiring about their unique endeavor. Recognizing the potential to do good, the friends decided to transform their fun into a fundraising initiative, using their witchy attire and paddleboarding skills to raise money for local organizations.

Choosing Worthy Causes

Each year, the group of "witches" carefully selects a different nonprofit to support. The process involves each board member presenting their chosen organization, which are then placed in a cauldron and drawn by a non-board member. This democratic approach ensures that the funds raised are directed to the causes that the group deems most deserving.

Bringing Joy and Healing

This year's Witches on the Water event in Chatham will raise funds for Dream Day on Cape Cod, a nonprofit that provides children with serious or life-threatening illnesses a free week of camp in the picturesque Nickerson State Park. Executive director Heather St.Onge, who has firsthand experience with the camp's healing power, is deeply grateful for the support of the witches. "It's a wonderful shot in the arm for that amazing organization, and what they do for those kids and their families is – ah, it's amazing!" exclaimed Erickson.

Lasting Connections and Extraordinary Families

The impact of Dream Day on Cape Cod extends far beyond the week-long camp experience. Families who have attended the camp often maintain strong connections with one another, forming an "amazing, extraordinary extra family" that they didn't know they needed. These lasting bonds are a testament to the transformative power of the camp, and the witches are determined to ensure its continued existence for years to come.

A Magical Touch for a Worthy Cause

As the Witches on the Water event approaches, the group is eager to lend their magical touch to Dream Day on Cape Cod. Heather St.Onge, the executive director, is deeply moved by the witches' unwavering support, stating, "Every time I go and talk about them I tear up which is why I keep touching my eye. They go above and beyond no matter what is asked, and I truly can't thank them enough."The witches' dedication to using their powers for good has not only brought joy and healing to the children and families of Dream Day on Cape Cod but has also inspired the local community. Their unique blend of witchcraft, paddleboarding, and philanthropy has created a truly remarkable and heartwarming story that continues to captivate and inspire all who encounter it.
