The latest mid-season update for Overwatch has brought a mix of unexpected visual tweaks and significant gameplay overhauls. While the community eagerly awaits Anran's promised facial redesign, players have humorously noted a subtle yet distinct 'jawline buff' applied to Mizuki's 'Streetwear' skin. This development, alongside more critical adjustments to hero abilities and role passives, highlights Blizzard's ongoing efforts to refine the game's aesthetic and competitive balance.
Upon the initial reveal of Anran's in-game model, a chorus of voices from fans and even her voice actress called for a revision. Many felt her appearance deviated from the original concept art, portraying her as younger and less distinctive. Game director Aaron Keller acknowledged these concerns, assuring the player base of a planned update to Anran's design later in Season 1. However, the recent mid-season patch arrived without any news regarding this particular change.
Instead, astute observers discovered an alteration to Mizuki's 'Streetwear' skin, where his jawline now appears noticeably wider and sharper. This unexpected cosmetic adjustment has sparked conversations among the player community, some finding it a curious priority given the unfulfilled promise of Anran's redesign. Despite personal preferences regarding the hat's fit, the jawline enhancement is a clear, if minor, aesthetic change.
Beyond the visual updates, the patch notes reveal more impactful changes. Mizuki's Remedy Aura healing field has seen its radius increased from 10 to 12 meters, making it easier to support more teammates. However, its degeneration delay has been shortened from 2 to 1.75 seconds, requiring more precise timing to maintain continuous healing. Similarly, Jetpack Cat's abilities have undergone a significant reshuffle. The problematic Territorial major perk has been removed, and Claws Out has been promoted from a minor to a major perk, reinstating its six-second cooldown. A new minor perk, Ulterior Motive, now converts 15% of primary attack healing into fuel, altering Jetpack Cat's early-game aggressive potential.
Vendetta, the gladiator, also received adjustments, with Siphoning Strike becoming a major perk and its lifesteal percentage returning to 40%. Raging Storm, a spinning attack, has been reclassified as a minor perk. These changes collectively impact Vendetta's sustain and aggressive capabilities in the initial stages of a match. Furthermore, role passives have been refined: Medic's self-healing increased from 25% to 40%, Bruiser now activates below 50% health, and Initiator's healing decreased from 75 to 60, no longer triggering at full health.
One particularly welcomed change by many players is the reversion of Stadium's item icon changes. These icons, introduced at the start of Season 1, were criticized for affecting accessibility and readability. The developers have acknowledged this feedback, restoring the General Mods to rarity colors with slightly brighter backgrounds to improve visibility. While not a full return to the old icons, this adjustment is a step towards enhancing player experience, demonstrating the developers' responsiveness to community input regarding both gameplay mechanics and interface design.
