In Kansas City, Missouri, a remarkable event took place at the Kansas City International Airport. A Boeing 757 plane was filled to the brim with kids, parents, and volunteers, creating a truly magical holiday season moment. This year, instead of soaring through the high skies, the children were able to enjoy a leisurely ride around the airfield for over 30 minutes. The anticipation of landing in the North Pole and meeting Santa Claus grew with each passing second.
Shadow Buddies Foundation: Spreading Holiday Cheer
Since 1997, the Shadow Buddies Foundation has been working tirelessly to ensure that every child has a safe trip to their destination. With the help of NFL Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez, the foundation has grown to include more than 130 kids and their families. Founder and Executive Director Marty Postlethwait knows firsthand the struggles that families face, having a child with multiple congenital birth defects. "It's an amazing thing we get to do," she said. "We can take the stress off their plates and give them the opportunity to enjoy the holiday season."Each child on the flight is dealing with a medical condition that affects their daily lives. They take medications regularly and visit doctors frequently. Some may be in wheelchairs or have visual impairments, but on Saturday, they were able to forget about their troubles for a few hours.Holiday Fun and Giving Back
Some children took out their frustrations with a snowball fight, while cotton balls were thrown from all angles. The pilots and flight attendants donated their time, showing their love and joy of giving back. "There's not one person here being paid to do this," Postlethwait said. "They are doing it from the heart."This year, partners like the FBI, TSA, and Kansas City Police Department worked together to ensure that each child had a safe, playful, and exciting time. "In a world where you can be anything, be kind," Postlethwait said. "We saw so much kindness on Saturday."The Shadow Buddies Foundation's efforts have made a significant impact on the lives of these children and their families. It's a reminder that even in the midst of challenges, there is always room for kindness and joy during the holiday season.
