SNAP recipients in 22 Oregon counties now have an extended period to request food replacement following a recent storm. This move aims to provide much-needed support to those affected by the weather event. The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) has taken this step to help households get back on their feet.

Helping SNAP Recipients Navigate Storm-Related Challenges

Impact of the Storm on SNAP Recipients

People living in Benton, Clackamas, Clatsop, Coos, Deschutes, Douglas, Jackson, Jefferson, Josephine, Klamath, Lake, Lane, Lincoln, Linn, Malheur, Marion, Multnomah, Polk, Tillamook, Umatilla, Washington, and Yamhill counties faced significant disruptions. Due to the Nov. 19 through Nov. 20 storm, they lost food purchased with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This has had a direct impact on their daily lives and access to essential nutrition. The storm caused power outages for over 25,000 households, further exacerbating the difficulties faced by SNAP recipients. ODHS recognized the urgency of the situation and obtained federal approval to waive the usual 10-day replacement benefit request deadline.

Extended Time for Requesting Replacement Benefits

Households in these 22 counties now have 30 days to request replacement benefits from ODHS. This extended period gives them more time to assess the extent of their losses and make a comprehensive request. They will have until Dec. 18 to submit their requests. For households that do not live in these counties, the usual process applies, and they need to request replacement food within ten days of the loss. This ensures that all SNAP recipients receive appropriate assistance based on their location.

Process for Requesting Replacement Funds

People requesting replacement funds should be ready to provide the total cost of the lost food. If they do not live in one of the eligible counties, they may need to provide proof that the food was destroyed. Once approved, the replacement benefits are added to the household's existing Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. The maximum replacement amount is the cost of the food lost, but it will not exceed the household's monthly SNAP benefits. This ensures that the assistance is fair and proportionate to each household's needs.

Additional Resources for Basic Needs

To help meet basic needs, there are several resources available. Households can find a food pantry by going to oregonfoodbank.org.
