Ohio Schools Allow Satanic Temple Lessons During School Day

Ohio schools have witnessed a unique educational development as students now have the opportunity to spend a portion of their school day immersed in the teachings of the Satanic Temple. This initiative, known as the Hellion Academy of Independent Learning (HAIL), was announced by the temple and began offering lessons once a month during school hours at Edgewood Elementary School in Marysville starting in December. The new off-campus lessons provide an alternative to the traditional Bible study offered through the religious release program and were driven by the desires of local parents.

Unconventional Education: Satanic Temple's Impact on Ohio Schools

Introduction to HAIL

June Everett, an ordained minister with the Satanic Temple, shared that it was local parents who approached her with the idea of introducing HAIL to their schools. This came as parents were seeking an alternative to LifeWise Academy, an Ohio-based Christian program that takes students out of class for 55 minutes once a week to study the Bible. LifeWise, headquartered in Hilliard, Ohio, is active in over 170 Ohio school districts.

HAIL is not affiliated with or approved by the local school district or board members. Its teachings go beyond the initial expectations associated with its name. According to the flier, HAIL aims to enhance students' critical thinking, encourage good works in the community, foster compassion and empathy, promote self-directed learning, and encourage creative expression. Everett emphasized that different Satanists may have different beliefs but as a whole, the Satanic Temple is non-theistic and does not believe in supernatural deities like God or Satan.

HAIL vs. LifeWise Academy

Leaders of LifeWise Academy, including CEO Joel Penton, believe that HAIL's program offerings highlight the need for the state legislature to pass proposed bill HB 445. This bill aims to provide "greater clarity" to the released time religious instruction programs. Penton stated that LifeWise is not fearful of other organizations offering such instruction and believes that all families should have the opportunity to choose religious study during school hours and that parents should make the best choices for their children.

The proposed bill would make a significant alteration to the existing bill permitting these programs. It seeks to replace the word "may" with "shall", making it mandatory for all school districts to adopt the policy that allows students to leave school for religious instruction instead of it being an optional choice. This shows the ongoing debate and potential changes in Ohio's educational landscape regarding religious instruction.

Impact and Significance

The introduction of HAIL and the proposed bill have sparked discussions and raised questions about the role of religion in schools. It highlights the diversity of educational options available and the need for schools to accommodate different beliefs and values. While some may view this as a controversial development, it also presents an opportunity for students to explore different perspectives and develop a more well-rounded understanding of the world.

As Ohio schools continue to navigate these complex issues, the presence of HAIL and the proposed bill will likely shape the future of religious instruction in the state. It remains to be seen how this will impact students, parents, and the educational system as a whole.
