How to Play Strands

The New York Times' Strands puzzle is a delightful twist on the classic word search. Currently in beta, it relies on daily participation to stick around. Every day, a new six by eight grid of letters awaits. The goal is to identify a group of words with a common theme, accompanied by a clue. Once a theme word is found, it remains highlighted in blue. Additionally, there's a special spangram that reveals the commonality among the words. It links two opposite sides of the board and can be a proper name. When found, it's highlighted in yellow. Each letter is used exactly once in either the theme words or the spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally, and diagonally, and even change directions mid-word. On a touchscreen, double-tap the last letter to submit your guess. If you manage to find three valid words of at least four letters that aren't part of the theme, the Hint button unlocks. Clicking it highlights the letters of one of the theme words. This puzzle's difficulty varies from day to day, sometimes requiring you to fill in missing words in a phrase or focusing on synonyms and homophones. It's always a surprise!

Today's Strands Answers

The spangram comes first, followed by the answer list. The spangram is "FICTIONGENRE." On the board, you can find it like this:StrandsNYTHere are all the answers:ROMANCECRIMEWESTERNHISTORICALFANTASYStrandsNYTI was initially looking for science-fiction, my favorite genre, but it didn't make the cut. I was surprised to learn that western fiction is its own subgenre. It makes sense when you think about it. I was confused because I thought "Fiction" would be the spangram as it connects from one side to the other, but it seems they wanted us to include "Genre" as well.
