At the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UA Little Rock), the Trojan Food Pantry has become a beacon of hope for students and faculty facing food insecurity. But this campus-wide initiative is just one part of a broader effort to ensure that no one goes hungry while pursuing their academic dreams.
Empowering the Community, One Meal at a Time
The Trojan Food Pantry: A Lifeline for the Hungry
The Trojan Food Pantry has been a game-changer for the UA Little Rock community, providing a vital safety net for those struggling to make ends meet. "There are a lot of people in general that don't know where their next meal is coming from," said junior Taylor Ward, the pantry's coordinator. This reality is all too common on college campuses, where financial constraints can make it challenging for students to consistently access nutritious food. The pantry's impact is undeniable, serving over 1,000 individuals annually, both students and faculty. "No student or faculty member should be unable to focus in the classroom because they haven't eaten," said staff member Corrigan Revels, underscoring the pantry's crucial role in supporting academic success.Driving Campus-Wide Donations: The Employee Giving Program
The Trojan Food Pantry's success hinges on the generosity of the UA Little Rock community. That's why the campus has launched an employee giving program, spearheaded by Laterika Tooks, to collect much-needed donations. "We have partnered with the staff senate on campus to collect canned goods for our Trojan Food Pantry," Tooks explained, highlighting the collaborative effort to keep the pantry's shelves stocked. These donations are not only essential for the pantry's operations but also serve as a tangible way for faculty and staff to contribute to the well-being of their peers and students. "We are over the campus campaign, which is our employee giving program," Tooks added, underscoring the university's commitment to fostering a culture of shared responsibility and support.Thanksgiving Baskets: Spreading Holiday Cheer and Nourishment
The Trojan Food Pantry's efforts extend beyond its daily operations, with the introduction of the Helping Hands food drive. This initiative, launched in November, provides Thanksgiving food baskets to UA Little Rock faculty, staff, and their families, ensuring that no one is left behind during the holiday season."The families on campus, faculty and staff can apply for those baskets," Tooks explained. "For just $25, we can feed one family." This program not only addresses food insecurity but also fosters a sense of community and shared celebration, as the university comes together to support one another during a time of gratitude and togetherness.Raising Awareness and Empowering the Community
At the heart of the Trojan Food Pantry's mission is a deep commitment to raising awareness and empowering the UA Little Rock community. "I've just been trying to get the word out there to some people on campus," said Ward, the pantry's coordinator. "Especially students because they don't know of this as well. So, I like to notify and help people, and many appreciate that."By actively promoting the pantry's services and encouraging participation, Ward and the entire team are ensuring that those in need are aware of the resources available to them. This proactive approach not only addresses immediate hunger but also fosters a sense of community and belonging, where no one is left behind.Sustaining the Effort: Donations and Volunteer Opportunities
The Trojan Food Pantry's success is a testament to the generosity and dedication of the UA Little Rock community. While direct donations of canned goods are preferred, Revels emphasized that monetary contributions also play a crucial role in keeping the pantry's shelves stocked and its operations running smoothly.Beyond financial support, the pantry also relies on the tireless efforts of volunteers. "Those wanting to help can call the food pantry at (501) 916-6000 or email them at pantry@ualr.edu," Revels shared, encouraging the community to get involved and make a tangible difference in the lives of their peers. With the Trojan Food Pantry at the forefront and the Helping Hands food drive providing additional support, UA Little Rock is leading the charge in addressing food insecurity on campus. By fostering a culture of compassion, collaboration, and shared responsibility, the university is ensuring that no student or faculty member is left behind, empowering them to focus on their academic and professional pursuits with the nourishment they need to succeed.
