The 2025 Fenworks North Dakota Esports State Tournament, held at the University of North Dakota, brought together over 140 high school teams to compete in a variety of digital and traditional games. This event not only showcased students' gaming prowess but also highlighted the educational benefits tied to esports, including critical thinking, teamwork, and technical skills. Kaleb Dschaak, CEO of Fenworks, emphasized the tournament's role in fostering community and preparing students for future STEM careers through hands-on experiences and collaboration.

On March 28, participants gathered in the Memorial Union Ballroom, where Collin Hanson and Blue Weber served as emcees, welcoming teams from across the state. The competition featured popular titles like VALORANT, Rocket League, and Mario Kart, alongside unconventional offerings such as oversized chess sets. Jacob Thomas, an educator and coach from Minot High School, noted that this event provided students with opportunities to connect with peers and university recruiters while building their own gaming systems using grant funding.

This year’s tournament marked its fourth iteration overall and second consecutive hosting by UND. Beyond friendly rivalry, it facilitated meaningful interactions among students who shared common interests in technology and gaming. Caleb Machart, a participant from Grand Forks Central, expressed excitement about forming new friendships during his first appearance at the championship.

Throughout the weekend, competitors utilized both designated areas within the Ballroom and the UND Varsity Esports facility located beneath Swanson Hall. By blending competitive gaming with interpersonal growth, the event underscored how esports can inspire young minds toward successful futures in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

As the curtain fell on Saturday, March 29, several schools claimed victory across various categories. Among the champions were the New Town Eagles in chess, Williston FN Coyotes Orange in Fortnite, Mandan Braves RL in Rocket League, and many others. These accomplishments reflect the dedication and talent displayed by all participants throughout the tournament.
