New Zealand Brewery Embraces Renewable Energy with Massive Solar Installation

A prominent New Zealand-based alcoholic beverage producer has taken a significant step towards sustainability by unveiling an extensive rooftop solar array at its largest production center in East Tamaki. This facility, known as The Pride, is the country's biggest brewery. Featuring a 1.21-megawatt solar system, it is expected to supply approximately 14.4% of the site’s electricity needs. In a bold move, Lion NZ, renowned for brands such as Speight’s and Steinlager, has introduced one of the most expansive rooftop solar arrays in the nation. Situated on the warehouse roof, this state-of-the-art installation spans roughly 5,400 square meters and consists of 2,424 panels, collectively weighing over 74,000 kilograms. These panels will be prominently visible from flights entering or departing Auckland Airport, symbolizing the brewery's dedication to green energy solutions.

Since its inception in 2010, The Pride was not originally designed to accommodate rooftop solar installations. Overcoming structural challenges required meticulous evaluation and cost balancing. Collaborating with industry leaders Meridian Energy, Reid Technology, and Solar Vision ensured the project's success. Funded through a power purchase agreement with Meridian, the array aims to decrease Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 13% per kilolitre of beverage produced since 2019.
