New York City Police Department to Integrate Citizen App for Enhanced Public Safety and Information Sharing

New York City is forging a new alliance with the Citizen application, marking a significant advancement in public safety communication. This innovative partnership will allow the city to dispatch immediate public safety notifications to users, tailored to their precise geographical area. Furthermore, governmental bodies such as the New York City Police Department, the Fire Department, and Emergency Management will gain access to a dedicated portal for reviewing user-submitted video content.

This collaboration is rooted in Citizen's established verified partner program for municipalities, which integrates with Axon's Fusus platform, a “real-time crime center” technology acquired last year. Although Citizen users have the option to restrict direct sharing of their videos with verified partners through the app's settings, it is important to note that all videos uploaded to the platform are, by default, visible and available for download by the general public. Mayor Eric Adams emphasized that the newly established NYC Public Safety account on Citizen will serve as a crucial conduit for distributing alerts concerning public safety matters, severe weather events, and major incidents, all of which will be localized by neighborhood, ZIP code, or borough. The Citizen app, originally launched as “Vigilante” in 2016 before being rebranded, empowers its users to report potential safety concerns, upload videos, and stream live footage directly through its interface. It boasts the capability to deliver alerts to nearby mobile devices within moments of a 911 call or a user-initiated report, and also offers a premium subscription service for enhanced safety features. While Citizen already permits law enforcement to acquire information via warrant, it additionally provides an expedited process for data access in emergency situations.
