Embracing the Tech Center's Transformative Impact

Craig Weigel's journey to the Kent Career Tech Center was fueled by a deep appreciation for the transformative power of vocational education. As a former high school principal, Weigel had witnessed firsthand the profound impact the Tech Center had on his own students, who often found their true passions and unlocked their full potential through the center's diverse offerings. Now, as the new principal, Weigel is eager to dive deeper, to learn from the instructors and staff, and to connect directly with the students and parents who are the heart of this dynamic institution."I'm just excited about seeing this programming directly impact kids in real time," Weigel expressed, his enthusiasm palpable. "I have heard about KCTC from my own students at East (Grand Rapids High School) and how much of an impact it has been for them. But to really see it firsthand and experience it, and to have some role in helping our instructors make that difference for kids, that's what's motivating."

Discovering a Passion for Education

Weigel's path to education was not a straight line, but rather a journey of self-discovery. Initially, he pursued a degree in biology, with plans to attend graduate school for physical therapy. However, a chance encounter as a basketball coach for the American Youth Basketball Association ignited a spark within him."I was asked to coach basketball for the American Youth Basketball Association one summer for a bunch of seventh- and eighth-grade students, and I fell in love with coaching," Weigel recounted. "I loved the interaction with students. I love the connection that we made in that coach/student athlete relationship and it just flipped a switch like, 'This is what I need to do.'" Inspired by this experience, Weigel pivoted his academic focus, registering for a teacher education program at the secondary level, a decision he describes as "a wonderful decision."

A Diverse Educational Background

Weigel's educational journey has been marked by a diverse range of experiences. He holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Adrian College and a master's degree in educational leadership from Florida Gulf Coast University. His teaching career began at Zeeland High School, where he taught biology, before he ventured to Florida's Fort Myers High School, serving as a teacher and athletic director.Returning to West Michigan in 2010, Weigel took on the role of assistant principal at East Grand Rapids High School, followed by a stint as the principal of Lakeside Elementary in the same district. For the past seven years, he has served as the high school principal at East Grand Rapids, honing his leadership skills and gaining valuable insights into the needs of students and the community.

Embracing the Tech Center's Unique Offerings

Weigel's connection to the Kent Career Tech Center predates his current role, as his oldest son recently navigated through the Launch U program, a dual-enrollment initiative that allows students to earn college credits while still in high school."My oldest son just navigated through the Launch U program here, and so he will be entering into that 13th year with GRCC this coming fall. He had a really positive experience navigating through that," Weigel shared, underscoring the transformative impact the Tech Center can have on students' educational journeys.Now, as the new principal, Weigel is eager to delve deeper into the diverse programming offered at the Tech Center, from the cutting-edge forensics equipment to the innovative tiny homes project in the construction program. He sees these unique opportunities as the "tip of the iceberg" of the transformative experiences awaiting students.

Weigel's vision for the Kent Career Tech Center extends beyond the classroom, as he seeks to forge strong connections with students, parents, and the broader community. During the recent open house, Weigel's approachability and genuine interest in the experiences of those he serves were evident, as he actively engaged with parents and students, eager to learn from their perspectives."I'm really excited about learning in depth what type of programming is really available to our students," Weigel expressed. "And so I'm excited about that opportunity this year to really invest in our instructors and our staff, understanding all the different ways they impact students. (Also) learning from our students' perspective what it is that they really gain out of this experience, and how that sets them up for their next step in life."Weigel's commitment to empowering students and supporting the dedicated staff at the Tech Center is a testament to his belief in the transformative power of vocational education. As he navigates his new role, he is poised to build upon the center's legacy of excellence, ensuring that every student who walks through its doors is equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to forge their own path to success.
