A change of command is underway in the world of Hawthorne girls' basketball as long-time coach Cornelius Ingram steps aside, paving the way for Shereka Jackson to take the reins. Ingram, whose tenure was marked by unprecedented success, has officially retired from coaching the girls' team but will remain involved with the Hornets' football program. Meanwhile, Jackson brings a wealth of experience and fresh perspectives to her new role.
Cornelius Ingram's legacy at Hawthorne extends far beyond his years on the sideline. Over eight seasons, he amassed an impressive 149-40 record while leading the Hornets to three state championships in girls' basketball (2020, 2023, and 2024). Additionally, he claimed two state titles in football during the same period. Ingram guided his teams to five district championships and reached the Final Four on four occasions, securing runner-up status in 2021. His decision to step down may be tied to personal commitments, particularly supporting his son CJ Ingram, who joins the University of Florida’s basketball team this season.
Shereka Jackson, Ingram's successor, boasts extensive coaching credentials that include stints as an assistant coach and leadership roles within AAU programs such as FLY and Tre Mann Elite. Originally hailing from Williston, she previously coached the Red Devils’ freshman girls basketball team during the 2016-17 season. In her announcement via Facebook, Jackson humorously referred to herself as an "O.G." Her appointment comes at a challenging time for the Hornets, who recently concluded a campaign with just nine varsity players and now face the loss of their top performers, including standout forward Jhalea Jackson and three-time defending Gainesville Sun Small School Player of the Year De’Mya Adams.
The Hornets demonstrated strong competitiveness last season, maintaining a ranking among the top five in the Rural Class before falling short against Williston in the Region 4 semifinals. As Jackson assumes leadership, her challenge will involve rebuilding the squad while upholding its tradition of excellence. Fans eagerly await how this transition will shape the future of Hawthorne girls' basketball.
With a storied past and a promising future ahead, the shift in coaching dynamics offers both excitement and uncertainty. The community looks forward to witnessing how Shereka Jackson will guide the team through challenges and opportunities, building upon the foundation laid by Cornelius Ingram. This marks not only a new chapter for the Hornets but also a testament to the enduring spirit of high school sports.
