New Beginnings: Baseball and Flag Football in Billings High Schools

On March 20th, a historic baseball game marked the beginning of a new era for high school sports in Billings. Approved by the school trustees just over a year ago, this sport will see participation from three local high schools starting in 2025. While only eight teams are currently playing in the AA category, there is anticipation for expansion as other cities like Great Falls and Bozeman consider joining. Meanwhile, Title IX regulations have led to the introduction of girls' flag football, set to debut this fall, aligning with its growing popularity nationwide.

This season's baseball games involve West High's varsity and junior varsity teams hosting Skyview for seven-inning matches. With the addition of these sports, Billings ensures equal opportunities for both genders. The Arthur M. Blank Foundation has been instrumental in promoting girls' flag football, leading to its classification as an emerging sport in Montana, expanding from three teams in 2022 to seventeen last year. As excitement builds for the first Billings games post-Labor Day, flag football's inclusion in the 2024 Summer Olympics further underscores its significance.

Baseball's Fresh Start in Billings

The initiation of baseball in Billings high schools signifies a significant milestone in the region's athletic landscape. On March 20th, West High's teams faced off against Skyview, marking the official start of this new venture. Currently, only a limited number of teams compete in the AA category, but the potential for growth is promising as neighboring districts explore adding baseball to their programs.

Billings Athletic and Activities Director Mark Sulser highlighted that while the current setup involves an all-class tournament held in Hamilton at the end of May, the future could bring dedicated AA state tournaments if more districts join. Senior, West, and Skyview will engage in fourteen conference games within the East Conference alongside other schools such as Billings Central and Sidney/Fairview. This strategic move not only enriches the boys' sports offerings but also sets the stage for broader participation across Montana.

Flag Football Takes Center Stage

In compliance with Title IX, Billings has introduced girls' flag football, a decision celebrated for its cost-effectiveness and appeal to students. Supported by the Arthur M. Blank Foundation, this initiative aims to provide thrilling opportunities for female athletes without imposing financial burdens on the district. The sport's rapid expansion from just three teams in 2022 to seventeen last year demonstrates its burgeoning popularity.

Mark Sulser emphasized the collaborative efforts between the Falcons organization and MHSA that have pushed Billings towards adopting flag football. Designated as an emerging sport, it promises exciting competitions starting late August, culminating in championship tournaments in early October. Furthermore, its recognition by the International Olympic Committee as part of the 2024 Summer Olympics highlights flag football's global relevance and importance, making this a pivotal moment for Billings' young athletes eager to showcase their skills on a larger platform.
